Middletown History

In the mid-1660s English residents of western Long Island and New England established settlements. Three villages were founded, Shrewsbury, Portland Point and Middletown. During the Revolutionary War some important landholding families gave their loyalty to England while others were on the side of the Colonials. Beginning in the early days, Middletown has been known for its numerous distinct neighborhoods.

Farming was prominent in the area and agricultural items were transported to other regions. The fish processing industry was a significant factor for the economy. The township experienced significant population growth after World War II ended. During the third quarter of the 20th Century, Middletown was converted from an agricultural rural region to a suburban community.
